A two-day clergy conference will be held featuring the Rev. Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams and the Rev. Dr. Micah Jackson in Lafayette, Louisiana and sponsored by the Episcopal Preaching Foundation and the Dioceses of Western Louisiana and Louisiana.
The Rev. Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams will present: "In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed": Preaching and the Formation of Identity for the Missional Church.
“In these workshops, we will explore the idea of identity as construct in scripture. Working with the metaphors of family, nation, adoption, marriage, and people, we will examine lectionary readings that offer an opportunity to reflect on the various identities to which we are called within the community of faith.”
“After reviewing the ways in which identity is formed, challenged and reformed in the Old and New Testaments, (session 1), we will work on readings for year A (session 2), with an eye towards encouraging and developing a congregational identity as a missional church.”
The Rev. Dr. Micah Jackson will be presenting:
Illustrations and Examples for the Missional Church
"Sweet stories about the pastor's family and pets are not often powerful enough to animate the Missional Church. In this session, we will examine the function of illustrations and examples in the sermon and identify the qualities of (and sources for) great material."
Sticking the Ending: Helping Your Congregation to Complete Your Sermon
"The ending of the sermon is a crucial part of effective preaching, since that's where the implications of the message are found. In this workshop, we'll look at several kinds of sermon endings and learn where and how they can be most effectively used to keep your congregation engaged in the mission of the Church."
