Inspired by the EPF’s heritage Preaching Excellence Program (“PEP”) for seminarians, the Foundation’s programs are generously underwritten to ensure that cost is seldom an obstacle to participation. Today’s EPF preaching programs are tailored for seminarians, priests, and deacons:

    • For Seminarians: The annual PEP Preaching Excellence Program has since 1987 elevated the pulpit skills and enthusiasm for excellence in preaching, of successive generations of Episcopal clergy. Among the many distinguished alumni of PEP are the previous Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church Katharine Jefferts Schori, and Randy Hollerith, Dean of Washington National Cathedral. Each year the deans of Episcopal seminaries are invited to nominate a limited number of candidates to attend PEP, who are destined to join the 1,800-plus alumni of PEP.
    • For Parish Priests:
      – The Annual PEP-II Preaching Excellence Program, a week-long residential conference resources parish clergy in the refinement of their technique and renewal of their enthusiasm for preaching excellently every Sunday. Since COVID-19 this conference has been delivered via Zoom.
    • Diocesan Preaching Conferences are a second EPF resource for ordained clergy, offered in partnership with diocesan leadership. These two-and-three day deep dives into preaching bring to the diocesan level the power of the EPF’s proven programming, combining practice in small moderated preaching groups with the insights of nationally celebrated speakers and preachers. Usually delivered via Zoom, Diocesan Conferences are developed ad hoc and tailored to current themes and priorities of each diocese.
    • For Deacons: Introduced in 2020 and structured at the diocesan or province level, weekend preaching intensive courses are designed specifically for the unique preaching needs of deacons. Deacons are a potentially powerful but frequently under-appreciated resource in the pulpit. EPF programs provide a refresher on the basics of exegesis and sermon preparation, and reinforce the value of the deacon’s unique and different message from the pulpit.
